Kids Doing Rad Stuff: Sophia and Liam
What are your names?
Sophia Abelita and Liam Burns.
How old are you both?
Where are you from?
Do you live near the ocean?
We live 4 hours away from the ocean.
What are your favourite subjects at school?
Liam: Band and Science.
What are your favourite animals?
Liam: Sea Turtles.
If you could talk to animals, what would you tell them?
Sophia: I’d tell them how much I love them and I’d ask them if there is anything they need from me.
Liam: Well, first I would probably freak out a little bit because an animal would be talking to me! Then, I would tell them that I’m doing my part to help save them and their home and ask what else I could do for them.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Sophia: To be a SUPER Genius.
Liam: I would like to have super-strength like THE HULK and be able to fly like Superman.
If you could change anything about school what would it be?
Sophia: NO TESTS!
Liam: Oh that’s easy, NO HOMEWORK!
If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
Liam: I would probably go to Canada! I have already been there, but I really liked it so I would go back.
What’s the happiest memory you have from this year so far?
Sophia: Meeting my environmental mentors Mark Ruffalo and Ted Turner at the Captain Planet Foundation Gala and Atlanta 100 Event.
Liam: Going to LA for 2 weeks with my friends AND meeting Mark Ruffalo aka THE HULK.
What are your biggest achievements?
Sophia: My biggest environmental achievements this year are becoming a brand ambassador for Simply Straws, Pela Cases, Bamboo Roots, and The Lost Straw. I’m also really proud that Liam and I are starting a non-profit called L?L, which stands for Let Oceans Live. We are also excited about being Youth Ambassadors for the Captain Planet Foundation.
Liam: Getting good grades and learning to play the Saxophone.
Who inspires you?
Sophia: Adrian Grenier. He is an actor/activist and started The Lonely Whale Foundation.
Liam: Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor and environmentalist.
Tell us a little bit about what you do…
Sophia: I’m an actor/activist. Liam and I have the same Agent (Barbara Garvey at East Coast Talent) and the same Management Team at Crackerjack Management. Liam and I share the same love for helping the environment!
Liam: Other than teaching people about what plastic is doing to our awesome oceans and sea animals—I love Acting. Especially improv. One of my favourite things to do is watch movies and how they are made. I am an actor with East Coast Talent (Barbara Garvey), Crackerjack Management L.A. and DDO Artists Agency (Laura Thede). I play the alto sax in my middle school band. I like to snowboard. I really enjoy playing video games—my favourite game is Uncharted and I am a 4th-degree brown belt in Karate.
When did you discover the issue of ocean plastic pollution?
Sophia: I learned about the issue this year when I was doing a report on cleaning up the environment! I learned that by 2050 there will be more plastic then fish in the ocean…unless we make BIG changes!
Liam: About a year ago.
What have you changed in your day to day life since learning about ocean plastic pollution?
Sophia: I stopped using plastic straws, plastic toothbrushes, plastic water bottles and plastic utensils, etc. I make a conscious effort to avoid plastics that can’t be recycled!
Liam: I no longer use disposable plastic straws or lids.
How do you educate others about the issue?
Sophia: I share tips on social media, I pass out bamboo/glass straws, I teach people by being a good example.
Liam: I hand out paper straws to my friends and family and show them pictures of what will happen if they don’t stop using plastic.
What are your goals for the new year?
Sophia: I’d like to book a feature film and I’d like to bring an Environmental Youth Conference to Atlanta in 2018.
Liam: Continue to help save our oceans and sea animals, learn to play the guitar, and maybe be in a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio or in a Steven Spielberg film. Well to be honest—I would be happy just meeting them. 🙂
If you could change anything in the world, what would you change?
Sophia: No Violence, No Hunger, No Illness, and NO MORE NASTY PLASTIC!
Liam: The destruction of our oceans and sea life and ending hunger, especially children.
