Kids Doing Rad Stuff: Sloane Jucker

What’s your name?

Sloane Jucker

How old are you?

Where are you from?

Tell us a little bit about your family… what’s your favourite thing to do together?

I have a younger brother and sister. My family likes to go to the beach to surf or Stand UP Paddle. We spend almost every weekend at the beach and hunting waves on Maui.

What age did you start learning to surf?

I don’t remember exactly, but I think I was 3 years old when my mom and dad pushed me into the waves at our local beach park.

What are your favourite things to do outside apart from SUP or surf?

I am also on the Lahaina Swim Team and I enjoy that too. I enjoy doing art projects and I really like to snorkel the surf spots around Maui when it’s flat.

What are some of your biggest achievements yet?

I was in the Maui Jim Shoot Out this year and I made finals three times already at the Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem in Ho’okipa.

Share with us a happy memory you have from this year so far?

My happiest memory this year so far is when I got to go on the Podium at the Maui Jim Shoot Out with the older girls. That made me very happy.

We saw that Zane taught you to foil, how did that go? Did you like it?

It was great, but I fell a couple of times. It’s not as easy as it looks. I liked it very much and would love to spend more time learning it.

If you could meet anyone in the world, who would it be?

I would like to meet Bethany Hamilton, she is really inspiring.

Who have you been lucky to have met so far?

At the Maui Jim Ocean Shootout I was lucky to meet Candice Appleby and when Sonni Hönscheid is on Maui I get to paddle with her sometimes.

What’s your dream job?

Pro surfer and Stand Up Paddler or I’d like to be a Marine Biologist.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

I really would like to go to Tahiti one day and Switzerland too because that’s where my dad is from.

We see that you attend lots of Zanes ‘InZane Super Groms’ events… tell us more about them… they look super fun!

The InZane Super Groms events are really fun, Zane always has these competitions with SUP, swim and run. We also get to go on canoes and the big SUP-Squatch. We do beach cleanups too before we start our day. Zane makes it all really fun and it’s never boring.

Do you prefer SUP or surf?

I surf a little more than I do SUP, but I like them both very much.

Do you have many problems regarding ocean plastics where you live?

Yes, we are getting more and more ocean plastics at our beaches. Luckily where I live the beach is facing away from the wind and current so they are all fairly clean, but other parts of the island are getting lots.

Do you ever participate in beach clean-ups?

Yes, we go to all of them, but we also pick up trash any time we see some on the beach. In fact, my dad and I were snorkelling in Lahaina on the weekend and we picked up a big piece of plastic from a car out on the reef.

If you could change anything in the world, what would you change?

I would make all the plastic go away and help the animals in the ocean.

Who inspires you?

Bethany Hamilton, Sonni Hönscheid, Candice Appleby, Lara Claydon and Stephanie Gilmore.
