Introducing… WestUfer

Tell us a bit more about your SUP school…

Our surf school WestUferfounded in 2012, is located on a lake in the Ruhr area. Our offer includes windsurfing, stand up paddling, longboarding and fitness. Because of the winter in Germany, we are open from April to October.

What does a typical day for you guys look like…

Outside the holidays we open at 12 o’clock. At this time the rental starts. Most of the days at 4 pm, sports for students begins. Here we offer different lessons (windsurfing, SUP and longboarding). At the weekend we have lessons for individuals. We do children’s birthday parties, company events or school class trips. During the holidays, we offer holiday lessons for children which starts in the morning.

What is the weather like over there at the moment? (February 2019)

At the moment we have winter. So it is normally raining with temeratures from 0 to 12 degrees.

What do you love most about SUP’ing?

I love moving in nature and the different view on it makes me relax. That’s the most I love about SUP.

Do you have many problems regarding ocean plastics where you paddle?

We have our surf school on a lake. Unfortunately, many people leave their garbage like plastic bottles and packaging here. The pollution with microplastic in the rivers has been recently investigated. We do not see it, but microplastic is also in our rivers.

How good is Germany at recycling?

I think Germany is one of the best at recycling. But I think Germany must become better in environmental education and produce fewer products made from plastic.

What types of activities do you get up to in order to keep your waterways clean and protected? Do you run any clean-ups?

Yes we do 1-3 clean-ups a year.

What is the weather like for you in the winter?

In winter we normally have windsurfing from -2 to 12 degrees. Sometimes there is snow in my area. We also have mountains in Germany where there is more snow in the winter.

DREAM destination?

Newzealand and Costa Rica.

Any recommendations of where to go paddling if we were to come to Bochum?

For a short SUP, you can paddle here on the lake. For a longer SUP you can start in Bochum and go down the Ruhr to Hattingen or Essen. That’s really nice and easy to SUP because you go with the current of the river.

What’s your favourite non-SUP related activity in Germany?

Windsurfing.

Do you run any other type of SUP fitness sessions?

Yes, we do SUP fitness and SUP yoga sessions.

What time of the year would you say is the best for SUP’ing in Germany?

From May to September.

What is a traditional food from Germany that you would recommend trying?

It is not healthy but you have to try Currywurst ðŸ˜‰

Tell us more about your SUP with dogs … !

With our courses with dogs, we bring dog owners and dogs together on the water. After a few exercises on land, many people can paddle with the dog on the water.
